The Authority Complex is the home to work exploring trust, fraud, power, risk, and resilience in modern systems. Part research archive, part public notebook, and part strategic commentary platform, it brings together writing, podcasts, keynotes, ideas, media appearances, and practical insights from working across financial crime prevention, behavioural science, organisational trust, and policy. Through a criminological lens, the Authority Complex explores how people behave inside systems, how those systems succeed or fail under pressure, and what organisations can do to design trust, resilience, and safety more effectively in an increasingly complex world.

Dr Nicola Harding, Criminologist

Authority Isn't a Strategy Problem. It's an Identity Problem.

What does it mean to be a trusted authority, not just a credible-looking one? Siobhan Mears joins us to explore the gap between external success and genuine leadership presence.

A transformational business coach who spent two decades in corporate before building her own practice, Siobhan brings a rare combination of strategic rigour and deep inner work to the question of why so many high-achieving founders still feel like they’re performing rather than leading.

We talk about the patterns that keep ambitious people stuck despite their track record, why real authority rests on identity as much as expertise, and what the rise of AI means for those who’ve built their reputation on being the expert in the room.

If you’ve ever hit a milestone and found it didn’t feel the way you expected, this one’s for you.

With a background spanning academia, industry, and government, she has spent her career asking how institutions earn and lose the confidence of the people they serve.

The Authority Complex is her exploration of that question in its most urgent form: what it means to be a genuinely trusted authority in a world where artificial intelligence is rewriting the rules of credibility. And most importantly, what does this mean for business, governments, and the rest of us?
